NPB for MLB Fans — Same Game, Different World
If you follow MLB, a Nippon Professional Baseball game is the single best sports outing you can add to a Japan trip: the game you know, wrapped in an atmosphere you've never experienced. Here's the orientation.
🏟 How NPB is organized
NPB has 12 clubs in two leagues — the Central League and the Pacific League — with interleague play in early summer and a postseason (Climax Series) leading to the Japan Series. The Pacific League uses the designated hitter; the Central League traditionally has pitchers bat.

⚾ What will feel different at the park
- Organized cheering: each team's fans sing dedicated songs for each batter, led by trumpets and drums from the outfield — for the entire game. The closest MLB comparison is a playoff crowd, every night.
- Games can end in a tie: regular-season games don't go on forever — after a limited number of extra innings, a tie is recorded. No marathon 18-inning nights.
- Balloons and rituals: many stadiums have signature traditions — jet balloons in the seventh-inning stretch (where permitted), team-specific chants, and the home run umbrella dance at Jingu.
- Small-ball is alive: bunts, hit-and-runs and situational play are a bigger part of the strategy than in today's MLB. Watch how crowds react to a well-executed sacrifice.
- Beer girls: vendors with kegs on their backs pour draft beer at your seat. It's as good as it sounds.
🎯 Picking your game

- Want intensity? A Giants–Tigers game is the classic rivalry, and Hiroshima's home crowd is famous for its energy.
